Australian midfielder Jordan Lyden, recently released by Aston Villa, is being coveted by a trio of League One clubs, as reported by Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

The 23-year-old spent some of last season on loan in League Two with Oldham, where he made ten appearances. He's struggled to break through at Villa following his move to the UK at the age of 15.

He made four Premier League appearances for them in 2015/16, but has since not worn the claret and blue, leading to his release. He's now being eyed by three clubs all looking to impress in League One.

Rotherham are one side believed to be keen. They've dropped out of the Championship this season, the third time in as many years they've switched between the two levels.

Tranmere, recently promoted from League Two, are also said to be interested. They saw Lyden first hand as the two sides drew 1-1 at Prenton Park in October.

Finally, Southend United are also hoping to snare the services of the former Australia Under 20 international. They're reported to be at the head of the queue after narrowly avoiding relegation on the last day of the season.

The Verdict

Lyden represents potential, but aside from his time at Oldham he's got little to show for the last few years. He's a defensive midfielder, likely to play a holding role which is becoming a key element in the modern day approach to football.

Of the three sides, his best bet would surely be Southend He's likely to get games there, they are already established in League One and it's in his best interests to go somewhere he can have an impact.

He missed three months of last season with an injury, which means he's also got fitness to prove as well as ability.
