Barnsley’s young supremo Callum Styles is a wanted man with many clubs scouting him – one of them being Southampton, according to the Sunday Mirror (14/02, page 70).
Labelled the ‘Bury Baggio’ by Tykes fans, Styles has risen to the occasion this season and became one of the star left-sided players in the Championship.
Styles was in and out of the squad under Gerhard Struber last season, but he started the last four games of the 2019/20 campaign – two of them in a new role at left wing-back instead of his natural central midfield position.
He carried his form from the end of last season into the current one and he’s made the wing-back position his own under both Struber and Valerien Ismael, scoring four goals in the process.
The 20-year-old has been very impressive especially going forward and it’s claimed by The Mirror that the Saints were watching Styles in Barnsley’s valiant defeat by Chelsea on Thursday night.
Southampton were no doubt impressed by how he played but they won’t be the only suitors interested in the youngster in the coming months if both Barnsley and Styles perform like they have been doing.

It’s no surprise that Styles is attracting interest from the very top level, but the problem with Southampton is that Ralph Hasenhuttl plays a 4-4-2 and is very stubborn about it – and that wouldn’t suit the player.
Styles has exclusively played in a wing-back role with three centre-backs behind them, so would he really fit in at St. Mary’s Stadium?
You could potentially see him fitting in at a Brighton & Hove Albion under Graham Potter, or someone like Newcastle or Barnsley’s local rivals Sheffield United, but Southampton may not be the greatest of moves if they were to come in for him in the summer.
