Southampton have taken forward Abdul Abdulmalik on trial as the 18-year-old aims to find himself a new club having turned down a deal to remain with Millwall this summer, according to Hampshire Live.

It has already been reported this summer that Abdulmalik is a player in-demand following his performances for Millwall’s under-18s side last season. He has already been on trial with League One Portsmouth who have opted against making a move for him.

Abdulmalik is also thought to be on the transfer radar of both Arsenal and Watford this summer as they seek to add the 18-year-old to their group of talented young players.

While it has also been reported that Swansea City have had offers turned down by Millwall for the forward this summer. That comes with the Lions seemingly not wanting to negotiate despite the 18-year-old having turned down a contract offer from them.

Hampshire Live’s latest report now reveals that Abdulmalik is on trial with Southampton at the moment and that he has already featured for the Saints in a pre-season friendly against non-league AFC Totton. It is expected that should he earn a deal he would go into their under-23s side.

The verdict

Abdulmalik’s situation at Millwall has become rather messy this summer with the Lions looking almost certain to lose the forward to some other side before the end of the transfer window.

However, it seems that they have so far not been wanting to negotiate a potential fee that they would be owed due to his age, with Swansea having made an effort to do so earlier on in the summer.

Southampton is a club where Abdulmalik would have serious chances to develop into a top player over the coming years. The Saints’ academy set up is one of the best in the country at producing talented players and the club always give players chances to move into the first-team squad when they have proved themselves.

Therefore, Abdulmalik would do well to impress them and earn a deal with them and it is a club that he should be prioritising even with the likes of Arsenal and Watford circling for him.
