Portsmouth had the reliable figure of Gavin Bazunu in goal last season, with the 20-year-old managing 44 appearances in League One and impressing on the South Coast.

He’s now landed himself a permanent move to the area from Manchester City, who have been open to his exit at this early stage of the transfer window.

It’s not with Portsmouth, though, with the Irishman linking up with Southampton, who confirmed the arrival of the goalkeeper yesterday on a five-year deal. It’s thought (BBC Sport) that the Saints have paid £12m for the service of Bazunu.

Given the fact that Bazunu had been such a roaring success on loan with Portsmouth, it rubs salt in the wounds of the Pompey supporters that he will be plying his trade for their fierce rivals next season.

What adds to that is the double swipe that Southampton took at Portsmouth on Twitter around the time of the signing on Friday afternoon:

The Verdict

This type of banter has become the norm on social media between rival clubs and it’s little surprise to see Portsmouth in the firing line after their current Player of the Year ended up with Southampton.

Southampton fans will take great delight it rubbing Pompey noses in the fact they’ve landed Bazunu, all whilst Portsmouth look to build their way out of League One.

It’s part of the game these days and Portsmouth have to take it on the chin and keep moving forwards.
