Brentford have registered their interest in signing Southampton striker, Sam Gallagher ahead of the new season according to TEAMtalk.

Thomas Frank is reportedly keen to line up a replacement for Neal Maupay, who looks set to leave Griffin Park in favour of a move to newly-promoted Sheffield United.

Maupay will leave a sizeable void in attack for the Bees, having been their main outlet for goals in the last couple of seasons.

The Frenchman scored 25 goals last season for Brentford as they finished 11th in the Championship, and his impressive performances evidently haven't gone unnoticed.

The Sun have recently reported that Sheffield United are willing to pay £15m to land Maupay's signature, as they look to survive in their first season back in the Premier League.

But Brentford are already in talks with Southampton over coming to an agreement with them for Gallagher, who looks as though he's heading for the St Mary's exit door.

Gallagher has a point to prove in the Championship, having previously played for both Blackburn and Birmingham earlier in his career.

The 23-year-old scored 12 goals for Blackburn, but struggled in his time with Birmingham, as he only found the back of the net on seven occasions.

It is claimed that Southampton want a fee in the region of £5m for Gallagher, who has also been attracting interest from Blackburn and Wigan according to journalist, Alan Nixon.

The Verdict:

This is exactly the type of player they should be targeting as Maupay's replacement.

Gallagher has experience of playing in the Championship, and will feel as though he has unfinished business in the English second tier.

He also has age on his side, and will be keen to establish himself as a goalscorer at this level having not scored as many as he would have liked to in his loan spells in the Championship earlier in his career.
