Southampton have reportedly beaten Manchester United and Liverpool to the signing of Birmingham youngster, Romello Mitchell.

The in-demand Blues player has been the subject of much speculation in recent months, but a conclusion is seemingly close to being reached.

Northern football correspondent for The Times, Paul Joyce broke the news on his Twitter account, with the deal set to rise to a fee of £1m.

Mitchell has been attracting interest from a number of high-profile clubs, and according to The Daily Mail, was a potential target for Manchester United and Liverpool in the summer.

The youngster has been a regular for the Birmingham under 18's side, and has been hugely impressive throughout this year's campaign.

But Mitchell is yet to make his first-team debut, and the Blues could be left to regret this decision later down the line, with the 16-year-old having a bright future ahead of him.

Scouts were sent to watch Mitchell in action earlier this season, and he netted twice against Liverpool's youth side and seemingly made a good impression.

But Southampton have evidently edged clear in the race to sign the promising young talent, and supporters will have high hopes for him, after seeing a number of their young stars go on to be world-class players.

The Verdict:

He's a future star.

Mitchell evidently has something about him if the deal is worth this much when he's so early into his footballing career.

He'll flourish at Southampton - that's for sure.
