Southampton midfielder Josh Sims is set for a move to League One club Doncaster Rovers according to the Daily Telegraph's Mike McGrath.

Sims has struggled for consistent game time with Southampton over the years, and has had a number of spells out on loan in search of regular minutes.

Sims spent the 2018/19 season out on loan with Reading in the Championship, and made 18 appearances for the Berkshire-based side, but failed to score a goal for the Royals.

He moved to MLS side New York Red Bulls on loan last season, making ten appearances for them before returning to Southampton in the summer.

But first-team opportunities are highly unlikely for Sims this season in Ralph Hasenhüttl's squad in the Premier League, which has seen him linked with a move away from St Mary's.

Doncaster Rovers are currently sat 11th in the League One table, and will be hoping they can mount a serious challenge for promotion into the Championship under the management of Darren Moore.

Doncaster are next in action this weekend, when they take on Portsmouth, in what is certain to be a tough test for Moore's side at Fratton Park.

The Verdict:

This is a real coup for Doncaster.

Sims has some experience of playing in the Premier League whilst with Southampton, and I'm surprised that a club in the Championship hasn't take a punt on him this summer.

I feel as though he's far too good of an option to have in League One, and I can see him playing a key role for Doncaster as they look to win promotion into the second-tier this term.

This is a fantastic bit of business by Darren Moore's side.
