Premier League side Southampton have joined the race to sign Swansea City winger Daniel James, according to reports from Football Insider.

The 21-year old has attracted a host of high-profile clubs this season, having endured an incredibly impressive campaign for Graham Potter's Swans. The winger has scored five goals and produced six assists for the Welsh club this term, with perhaps his best individual display of the season coming against Stoke City on Tuesday night.

He opened the scoring for the Swans in unstoppable fashion, played a huge part in their second goal, and drew fouls from Bruno Martins Indi and Tom Edwards which ultimately saw them both get sent off.

Premier League champions Manchester City were believed to be lining up a bid for the electric winger, whilst Leeds United were set to sign the player in January before Swansea pulled the plug in the latter stages of the window.

But Southampton are the latest club to join the race for James, with the Saints reportedly looking to gain revenge on the Whites after beating Ralph Hasenhuttl's men in the race to sign Motherwell youngster Stuart McKinstry.

The 16-year old is set to sign for Leeds in a deal worth £400,000 plus add-ons, and will join up with Carlos Corberan's under-23 side.

The Verdict

It really doesn't come as a surprise to me to see James continuing to be linked with Premier League sides, as he is arguably one of the most exciting players in the Championship right now.

I think Southampton would be a great move for James to be honest - they aren't the greatest team in the top-flight, but he is likely to be a regular starter for the Saints if he does indeed sign for him.

Can they afford him though? At the rate he's going, he's likely to be worth multi-million pounds in the summer.
