Midfielder Dean Hammond started his career coming up through Brighton's academy and breaking into their first team.

In his first couple of seasons he was loaned out to Aldershot Town and Leyton Orient but eventually made over 100 appearances for Brighton.

Ahead of the 2007-08 season, he signed for Colchester United where he spent two seasons but Colchester accepted a bid from Southampton and he moved to St Mary's for the 2009-10 season.

As soon as he made his debut, Hammond became a regular starter for Southampton and was rewarded by being named as captain in November 2009.

Despite suffering an achilles injury in his first season with the club, he made 49 appearances in all competitions for the Saints.

He continued to be a regular starter and club captain of the team for the next two seasons and got promoted with Southampton to the Premier League in 2011-12.

Unfortunately as Southampton settled into life in the Premier League, Hammond found himself out of favour and lost the captain's armband to Adam Lallana.

He made only one appearance for his team which was in the second round of the League Cup and consequently joined Brighton again on loan for the remainder of the season.

Hammond was a regular at Brighton and made 37 league appearances and scored two goals in the season. Despite doing well though, Brighton allowed him to return to his parent club at the end of the season.

Subsequently Leicester City signed Hammond and again, he managed to solidify his place in the side making 29 league appearances in his first season there.

Leicester gained promotion to the Premier League and Hammond made his Premier League debut on the opening day of the season as a substitute for Danny Drinkwater.

However soon after, Hammond injured his calf and was out for a month. Despite returning for two games, he then suffered the same injury again. In total he made 12 appearances for Leicester that season.

When Claudio Ranieri became manager in the 2015-16 season, Hammond fell out of favour with N'Golo Kante chosen instead of him and as a result the club said he could be loaned out.

He made a loan move to Sheffield United under former manager Nigel Adkins and was a solid starter in the side making 34 appearances and scoring twice in the season.

As a result he signed for Sheffield United permanently but when new manager Chris Wilder came in, he was placed on the transfer list immediately.

To carry on playing football he briefly returned to Leicester playing as an over age player in U23 games and coaching.

Ahead of the 2017-18 season, Hammond announced his retirement.

He briefly came out of retirement to sign for Isthmian League Premier Division club Worthing but the pandemic hit before he could make an appearance and now he has retired once and for all.
