Southampton are said to have registered their interest in signing young defender, Rhys Davies from League One strugglers, Shrewsbury Town according to the Football Insider.

The 17-year-old is currently on loan with Chippenham Town in the Vanarama National League, with Shrewsbury hoping that he can gain valuable first-team experience from the loan spell.

Davies was also out on loan with Nuneaton Borough for the first half of the season, and he's starting to make a name for himself in the early stages of his career.

His impressive performances haven't gone unnoticed, with Southampton expressing an interest in signing him in the summer, when the transfer window reopens.

Any potential deal between the two clubs seems to be moving at a fast pace, with Davies already undergoing a trial with the Premier League side, and has made a good impression with the coaching staff.

Shrewsbury are said to be bracing themselves for further bids from Southampton and other Premier League and Championship clubs in the summer.

The League One side had high hopes for Davies, but will seemingly have their hands forced in this one, with the full-back having the potential to be playing at a higher level in the future.

The Verdict:

He could be a star of the future.

If you're attracting interest from a reputable Premier League club like Southampton, then you've evidently got something about you.

Davies could thrive with the Saints and could prove to be the next success story to come out of St Mary's.
