Sky Bet League One side Portsmouth are interested in signing Newcastle midfielder Daniel Barlasar on loan this summer, according to Portsmouth News.

The 22-year-old has caught the eye after a string of impressive performances on loan with Accrington Stanley in League One last term.

The combative midfielder made 45 appearances in all competitions last season, chipping in with three goals from midfield and helping John Coleman's side avoid an immediate relegation back down to League Two.

Barlaser is yet to make a league appearance for Newcastle, but has made three senior appearances in cup competitions for the Magpies, and another loan move away from St. James' Park looks to be on the cards for him this summer.

Kenny Jackett's Portsmouth are believed to be interested in signing him on loan, but the South Coast club reportedly face competition from Championship sides Wigan Athletic and Preston North End.

Pompey will be looking to bolster their midfield options this summer, with Dion Donohue's release leaving them somewhat light in that area.

The Verdict

I think Barlaser would be a good signing for Pompey - he will have learned about League One after his spell with Stanley, and he is more than capable of making an impact at Fratton Park.

I think, though, that with Preston and Wigan believed to be interested, Newcastle will probably want him to test himself in the Championship after already proving himself in League One.

It would be a coup if Pompey were to get him in the summer, to say the least, but I think that Preston would be the best move for him given how Alex Neil likes to develop young players.
