Portsmouth are beginning talks to appoint a new director of football ahead of next season, as they look to put together a promotion push in 22/23, Football League World has been told.

Pompey finished outside of the playoffs this season in Sky Bet League One, in a campaign that offered some positives but also a few drawbacks.

Indeed, it was a year of some inconsistency on the pitch and that will need to be addressed this summer, with the club looking at off-field appointments to help them with that aim.

And, that said, Football League World has been told that the club is looking to appoint a new director of football ahead of next season, with talks underway.

Pompey will naturally want to try and get the appointment done nice and swiftly in order for the new arrival to work out a strategy with manager Danny Cowley as to how best attack the transfer window.

Portsmouth are one of the bigger clubs and draws in League One and that should aid their quest to improve the side, as they aim to finally get back to the Championship.

Whoever arrives, they know that the expectation next year is to challenge for the top six at the very, very least.
