Manchester United midfielder James Garner is set to be given a chance to stake his claim in pre-season under new head coach Erik Ten Hag on the strength of his performances for Nottingham Forest, sources have exclusively told Football League World.

The 21-year-old has been in fine form for the Tricky Trees in the Championship this season, carrying on from where he left off in the second half of the 2020-21 season.

In 37 league appearances this season, Garner has scored four times and provided six assists, as well as impressed in the FA Cup against Premier League opposition.

Ten Hag, who will arrive at Old Trafford in the next few months from Ajax to replace Ralf Rangnick in the dugout, is keen to give the young central midfielder an opportunity to be a part of his plans.

And there is a genuine feeling that he could become a part of United's Premier League squad next season as the club look set for a huge overhaul in multiple positions.

It would seem that Forest have slim-to-no chance of retaining Garner's services for a second full season in 2022-23 regardless of the league they are in - he has also been linked with a move to Leeds United in recent weeks.
