Oldham Athletic are set to sign Tom Whelan on a free transfer days after his release from Chesterfield, a source has exclusively revealed to Football League World.
Whelan had been on the books at Chesterfield since late 2020 and scored five goals in 27 fifth tier appearances last season.
However, a statement from the club earlier in the week confirmed that the 25-year-old was moving on after they mutually agreed to end his contract early.
A source has today revealed to Football League World that Oldham are swooping to sign the midfielder on a free transfer and add him to their roster ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.
Keith Curle was appointed Oldham manager back in March 2021, succeeding Harry Kewell in the hot-seat and eventually leading the Latics to 18th in the League Two table.
The squad at Boundary Park needs work, though, with Curle hoping Whelan can add goals from midfield ahead of the new campaign.
Alongside Chesterfield, Whelan has featured for Yeovil Town, as well as Chippenham and Weymouth on loan.
