Nottingham Forest are set to deal Rangers a double blow with deals for Ibrox defender Connor Goldson and in-demand Blackburn Rovers midfielder Joe Rothwell gathering pace after their Premier League promotion, sources have exclusively informed Football League World.

The Reds beat Huddersfield Town 1-0 in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Sunday to end their 23-year wait for top flight football and must now work to strengthen for the step up – with the 2022/23 campaign set to get underway in early August.

Goldson and Rothwell, who are both out of contract at their respective clubs this summer, have emerged as Forest targets and it is growing increasingly likely that they will join Steve Cooper's squad.

Sources have exclusively informed Football League World that Rothwell's move to the City Ground is gathering pace while the East Midlands club are confident they'll sign Goldson now their promotion has been confirmed.

FLW understands that Rothwell, who has been linked with a host of clubs ahead of his impending Blackburn exit, was set to move north of the border and join Rangers at one point but could now seal a move to the Premier League with Forest instead.

The 27-year-old nearly joined Bournemouth in the January transfer window but may now be battling against the Cherries in the top flight next term.

Goldson, meanwhile, has been offered a new contract at Ibrox but there is confidence at the City Ground he will reject it in favour of a move to Forest.

The central defender has made 222 appearances for Rangers in his four years at the club, including helping them reach the Europa League final earlier this month.
