Middlesbrough are set to recall Djed Spence from Nottingham Forest following Chris Wilder’s appointment. Football League World also understand that the youngster also signed a low-key contract extension at the Riverside Stadium ahead of his loan move to the City Ground.

Spence was shipped out to Forest on loan by Neil Warnock, but has managed to emerge as one of the Championship’s outstanding, attack-minded full-backs under Steve Cooper - despite the fact it was Chris Hughton who initially took him to the East Midlands.

However, the picture back at Middlesbrough has changed significantly in the last week.

Wilder has replaced Warnock and has his eyes set on recalling Spence when January comes around. There’s a recall option in the agreement that took the 21-year-old to Forest.

Football League World understand that Boro will exercise their right to recall Spence, dealing Forest a blow when January comes around.

Spence has made 11 appearances for Forest and played a crucial role in helping them climb out of trouble under Cooper.

Wilder has clearly liked what he’s seen and is expected to recall Spence at the earliest opportunity. His success at Sheffield United came in a wing-back system, which Spence is perfect for.

In addition to that, it’s been suggested to Football League World that Middlesbrough did also extend Spence’s contract before he went out on loan.

That leaves the Teesside club in a strong position in the long-term, as well as the short-term.
