Coventry City loanee Ian Maatsen could head back to his parent club Chelsea during the January transfer window if Ben Chilwell's injury proves to be a long-term one, sources have exclusively told Football League World.

The England international limped off during the Blues' 4-0 victory over Juventus on Tuesday with a knee problem, although the extent of the issue is yet to be determined.

Chilwell's injury could naturally heal and he could be back by the start of 2022, although there are fears that it could require surgery and rule him out for the rest of the season.

If that proves to be the case, then Dutch wing-back Maatsen could be recalled by Thomas Tuchel after being in sparkling form for the Sky Blues in the 2021-22 campaign.

The 19-year-old has taken his performances to a new level after spending last season at League One Charlton Athletic and has featured 17 times in the Championship for Coventry, scoring once.

Mark Robins could be handed a major blow when January rolls around as it appears that Chelsea do have a recall option in Maatsen's deal if they need to use it, and if that was to be used then it would leave Sky Blues without a natural left-sided wing-back.
