Blackpool are waiting to see whether Chelsea will recall Dujon Sterling from his loan spell at Bloomfield Road as Thomas Tuchel's injury problems mount, Football League World understands.

Sterling was sent on loan to Blackpool back in the summer transfer window, with Chelsea placing faith in Neil Critchley to develop the 22-year-old.

It is Sterling's third loan away from Chelsea, having previously spent time with Coventry City and Wigan Athletic.

And, the right-back is developing nicely, making 13 appearances for Blackpool in all competitions during the first-half of 2021/22.

Football League World understands that Chelsea are currently considering recalling Sterling to pad out Tuchel's squad, as they fight on four fronts for trophies.

An injury 'crisis' at Stamford Bridge has robbed the German of Reece James' services at right wing-back, with the England international expected to be eight weeks on the sidelines.

In recent weeks, Chelsea have relied on wingers playing in a more limited wing-back role, whilst there's also the option for Cesar Azpilicueta to play in that position - the captain's preferred role in Chelsea's wing-back system is at right centre-back, though.

That could lead Chelsea back to Sterling, but the Blues face a race against time to trigger a recall.

Football League World have been told that the cut-off for any recall is January 14th, leaving Chelsea with just days to decide whether or not to cut Sterling's stay at Bloomfield Road short.
