Sunderland have announced on Twitter that keeper Jon McLaughlin is their Player of the Season, with Aiden McGeady in second and Luke O'Nien in third place.

The Scottish stopper had a fine season for the Black Cats, significantly improving on the previous campaign when they struggled to find a safe pair of hands between the sticks.

The number one jersey was never going to another player as the 31-year-old impressed from the first match to the last.

Sunderland's success was largely built on their defensive ability, not least two clean sheets in the play-off semi-finals and that had to be down in no small part to the keeper.

Supporters have been delivering praise on social media, but it's not all positive for the club.

One supporter has quite rightly pointed out that it tells a lot about their season when the keeper is the top player. They lacked penetration up front, especially after Josh Maja left and were it not for the former Hearts man, they might have finished outside the top six.

Fans have been complimentary towards the impressive custodian, but one or two seem to hope that an outfield player takes the bull by the horns next season and impresses.
