Mike van der Hoorn admits he does not know if he will extend his contract with Swansea beyond the end of this season, and says he would one day like to play in his native Holland again.

The defender is one of a number of players out of contract at the Liberty Stadium this summer, and it seems that van der Hoorn is still undecided about whether or not he will put pen to paper on a new deal in Wales.

Speaking to the official YouTube channel of his former club Utrecht about his future, van der Hoorn said: “You think about it [my current contract]: is it enough here or do I want to continue? A difficult situation and the virus doesn’t really help.

"These are exciting times for guys with an expiring contract, but there are also opportunities."

Despite that, it seems van der Hoorn is still keen to see out the current campaign with Swansea, as they look to make a late push for the Championship play-off places, with the Dutchman adding: “It remains to be seen what will happen. Hopefully, the season can still be completed, then we can look further."

On the issue of a return to Holland in the future, the 27-year-old continued: "Ultimately, I want to return to the Netherlands. It’s the club I owe my career to. You have to do it yourself, of course, but they gave me that opportunity."

Since joining Swansea from Dutch giants Ajax back in the summer of 2016, van der Hoorn has made a total of 119 appearances in all competitions for the Wales-based club, scoring six goals in that time.

The Verdict

This will be a big concern for Swansea.

Van der Hoorn is a key figure for them on the pitch when available, and you feel they would rather not lose his influence at the heart of their defence if possible.

Off the pitch as well, the Dutchman does seem to be a popular player with the club's fans, meaning his departure is unlikely to go down too well in that sense either.

However, van der Hoorn's comments here do suggest that he is keen to try something new in his career sooner rather than later, and with his contract coming to an end, this is one that could soon be taken out of Swansea's hands.
