‘Some cracking players’, ‘More passion than the first team’ – Plenty of Sunderland fans react to u23s’ spirited display against Crystal Palace

It’s been a torrid week for Sunderland AFC.

The Black Cats had the chance to secure promotion to the Championship via the League One play-offs but ultimately fell short with a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Lincoln City over two legs.

That has meant that Lee Johnson’s side are left to lick their wounds, but unfortunately the same fate has been handed to their under-23s.

Sunderland took on Crystal Palace under-23s at Selhurst Park in the Premier League 2 Division 2 Play-Off final, but were unfortunately edged out in dramatic fashion.

After playing out a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes and extra-time, the Black Cats ultimately fell to a 5-3 penalty shootout defeat against the London club.

The young Wearsiders will no doubt be disappointed to lose the showpiece event in such dramatic circumstances, but the feeling among supporters is a lot more upbeat.

While it’s the second Sunderland side to lose a play-off clash in the space of three days, the general feeling is that the under-23s have done the club proud, but not only that, with many feeling that some have played their way into Lee Johnson’s first team plans next term.
