AFC Wimbledon are battling bravely against relegation in League One, but January acquisition Joe Piggott is determined to help fire them to safety, and beyond.

Piggott joined during the January window from Maidstone after scoring 12 goals for them.

He scored on his Dons debut, the crucial 2-0 home win against Blackpool, as well as grabbing the winning goal this weekend against Bristol Rovers. That 1-0 win stopped a run of four straight defeats and leaves Wimbledon one point clear of the drop zone.

Just six points between Oldham in the final relegation spot and Doncaster in 14th, there's everything to play for. Goals are the currency teams spend in order to stay up and Piggott's form will be crucial if the Dons are to stay in League One.

Speaking to Wimbledon's official site, he said: "Obviously I'll be looking to score as many goals as I can. I can improve on bits of everything, really. Being a striker, it's your craft to score goals, and that's the hardest thing in football. I want to get as many goals as I can, but I also to keep learning more to improve my overall game."

Both Lyle Taylor and Cody Macdonald are also prone to bagging a goal or two, Taylor has 14 and McDonald has seven. With question marks over Taylor's future, boss Neil Ardley will be delighted to see his new face fitting in quickly.

Piggott will need to be in fine form as the next three matches feature Peterborough, Blackburn and Charlton all sides vying for promotion.

The Verdict

With the firepower at their disposal, Wimbledon certainly have enough in their locker to stay up.

Piggott has been on the cusp of achieving his potential for some time now, as his form at Maidstone showed. If he gets a run of games, he could well be the next big thing to emerge from the National League.
