Brentford midfielder Sergi Canos has signed a new long-term deal at the club, keeping him at Griffin Park until 2023.

Brentford’s season under Thomas Frank has so far been one to forget, but fans had something to cheer about today as their Spanish midfielder Sergi Canos signed a new contract to keep him at the club until 2023.

The 22-year-old is in his fourth season at Griffin Park, having joined from Norwich in 2016.

He began his career at Liverpool where he made a number of appearances for the U21 side, before being released and moving to Carrow Road.

He was a regular starter for Brentford last season and has been so far this season. The Spaniard has played 11 Championship games this season with three assists and yet to score a goal.

He, along with the league’s joint-second highest-scorer Ollie Watkins, has been Frank’s stand-out performers this year - Watkins has scored seven of Brentford’s nine Championship goals this season, and also signed a deal until 2023 in the summer.

Bees fans were buzzing at the news - one fan even said that Canos was ‘the only player his kid sings about’.

A common theme arising from the Canos news is his incredible work-rate in games - many Brentford fans were mentioning the effort he gives to the club, and how he’s come back from difficult injuries to perform for the first-team.

Brentford are 17th in the Championship - four points from Reading in 21st.

Canos and co have plenty to work on during the international break if they’re to turn their season around.

They’ve been widely criticised at times this season, but going into the international break off the back off a 3-1 win at Barnsley, a 1-1 draw with Bristol City and a narrow 1-0 loss away at Nottingham Forest, Frank’s fortunes may be turning around.

With rumours of Watkins departing for Sheffield United in January, Canos will have to step-up his game even further at Brentford, and start to bag as many goals as he does assists.
