It had been a quiet summer at Ashton Gate up until last week, Bristol City fans were calling out for more action as they had only seen centre-back Robbie Cundy arrive from Bath City and defender Lloyd Kelly depart to join Bournemouth.

Then the Robins made six signings in a week, a combination of free agents and permanent deals, as Lee Johnson finally got some reinforcements for his squad.

We quiz FLW writer Ned Holmes, who has examined City's transfer business so far...

First of all, what business has been done?

"The biggest news since the Kelly deal are the arrivals of Tomas Kalas and Jay Dasilva from Chelsea after both had successful loan spells with the Robins last season. Kalas joined for a club record £8 million, while Dasilva arrived for £2.16m, according to Transfermarkt.

"In demand attacking midfielder Sammie Szmodics joined the club on a three-year deal, after seeing his contract expire at Colchester United.

"Tommy Rowe has also joined from Rotherham United on a free transfer, as have goalkeepers Rene Gilmartin, from Colchester, and Daniel Bentley, from Brentford."

Has it been a success so far?

"Yes, so far it has been excellent despite the exit of Kelly, who was highly spoken about at the club. Dasilva had displaced Kelly in the side toward the end of the season and proved himself to be a great left-back at this level.

"Rowe is a versatile player who is comfortable at left-back or on the left side of midfield and will likely provide cover or competition for Dasilva.

"The return of Kalas is huge and should see him reunite with Adam Webster in a solid central defensive partnership, which helped the Robins to concede the third-fewest goals in the league in 2018/19.

"Goalkeeper was a trouble position for the Robins last season. 18-year-old Max O'Leary regularly had to fill in due to injury and new reinforcements were necessary after Frank Fielding's exit.

"Gilmartin and Bentley should provide that and could compete with Niki Maenpaa for the starting job.

"Szmodics has been brilliant for Colchester over the past two seasons, scoring 28 goals and generating 13 assists in that time, and he was an in-demand prospect. Both Leeds United and Derby County were reportedly interested so getting him is great business."

What is the signing of the summer at this point?

"It has to be the return of Kalas. The defender made 41 appearances and formed one of the most formidable central defensive partnerships in the Championship alongside Webster last season, with both defenders rated in the top 40 players in the league by Whoscored.

"The success of Johnson's side was built around defensive strength, having conceded only 53 goals, and the 26-year-old's return should ensure that continues."

Do they need to bring in anyone else?

"Top scorers Famara Diedhiou, 13 goals, and Andi Weimann, 10 goals, were not consistent enough last season and a new forward could help them take that next step.

"Jack Hunt was unconvincing last season at right-back and, following the exit of Eros Pisano, Johnson may look to strengthen there. However, Zak Vyner has just returned from loan at Rotherham and may be the best option.

"Korey Smith's consistent injuries in central midfield saw the Robins boss utilise Webster in that position on occasion, and more cover is needed there."

Are they at risk of losing anyone?

"The big risk at this point is Webster. The centre-back had a brilliant debut season, scooping both player of the year awards, and has been linked with Premier League clubs – most recently Aston Villa.

"Another player who looks like leaving is Callum O'Dowda. The 24-year-old has rejected offers of a new contract at City and with just one year left on his contract could depart this summer.

"There were rumours that Diedhiou may leave, however, they have since been dismissed."

What would an ideal end to the summer look like?

"Keeping Webster would be the most important move of the summer if they can pull it off, so if he is at Ashton Gate when the window closes that will be ideal.

"O'Dowda signing a new contract with the Robins would also be great business. The winger had the most productive season of his career in 2018/19, grabbing five goals and five assists, and City are understood to be open to keeping him.

"The arrival new central midfielder to provide cover for Marlon Pack, Josh Brownhill, and (when fit) Smith would also fill an important need.

"I don't believe Diedhou is a good enough striker to match City's ambitions of promotion, so seeing a higher class forward arrive to take his place would be ideal."
