Goalkeeper Chris Maxwell has signed a new contract with Blackpool, the newly promoted Championship club have confirmed.

Maxwell joined Blackpool from local rivals Preston back in January 2020, and has since gone on to make 62 appearances in all competitions for the Seasiders, captaining them to promotion to the Championship via the League One play-offs last season.

The 30-year-old had been set to enter the final year of his current contract with Blackpool this summer, although that is no longer the case.

It was announced on Thursday morning that Maxwell has now signed a new two-year deal with the club, who also hold the option to extend that deal by a further 12 months.

That now means that Maxwell's future at Bloomfield Road is effectively secure until the end of the 2023/24 season.

Perhaps not surprisingly given the impact he has made at the club, plenty of Blackpool fans appeared delighted with news of Maxwell's new deal, as they took to Twitter to react to confirmation of the goalkeeper's extended contract.
