New Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has spoken of the qualities he will be seeking in any potential new signings he makes at Villa Park.

Smith is widely expected to make a few changes to the ranks come the January window, and after working on a smaller budget at Griffin Park with Brentford, he will be keen to see what he can do given the backing of a board with hefty funds behind them.

However, Smith is keen to not detract from the qualities he has always sought in a player, and in a report by the Birmingham Mail quoting from the Sun, Smith laid down his plans.

"They’ve got to be talented - but talent is just one thing. They must have a great attitude. I signed James Tarkowski from Oldham and he’s gone on to play for England. Chris Mepham came through the youth ranks and is now playing for Wales" said Smith.

“There are gems to find without breaking the bank."

Smith also said he was 'not a believer in budgets' adding that you might 'as well give up' if you cannot find another way of competing.

The former Walsall manager, who is an Aston Villa fan, should have no such trouble in terms of what he can and cannot spend at Villa Park, with the club's Egyptian investors likely to back their new man as they seek a return to the Premier League.

Villa fans, what do you think? Will Smith bring in good players of the right attitude? Let us know in the comments!
