The Carabao Cup is back for a new season this week as clubs from the Championship down to League Two get underway.

It's a competition that isn't always prioritised by many sides given the amount of fixtures ahead this season but fans still like to see a cup run if and when they can.

For Nottingham Forest, then, there's a good chance that they could embark on a run with a game that looks favourable on paper against Bury this week.

However, it's clear that Forest are going for promotion this season and, though it is early, Aitor Karanka might be thinking about rotating his side against the Shakers.

With that said, then, and with the size of the squad available to him, it seems clear that some changes should be on the way.

Here, then, we take a look at an experimental XI that the Spaniard could potentially play...

Jordan Smith could get his chance between the sticks for this one.

Sam Byram signed on Friday, could it be time for his debut?

Michael Hefele is another recent arrival, he could get a chance.

Michael Dawson will bring that air of first-team knowhow to the side.

Ben Osborn may start in the left-back role.

Liam Bridcutt looks down the pecking order again but may get a chance.

Ben Watson may also have an opportunity to nail down a first-team place with 32-year-old Adlene Guedioura rested.

Matty Cash is a good young player and deserves playing time.

Ryan Yates in a more advanced role? It could be worth seeing what he can do.

Joe Lolley is a fine, hard-working player and should give Bury problems.

Ben Brereton looks set for few minutes at the moment, this could be his chance to change that.
