Sheffield United are monitoring free agent Adlene Guedioura as Slavisa Jokanovic looks to strengthen his squad before the deadline.

The new boss has been trying to bring in a midfielder during the window and a move for Ronaldo Vieira seemed at an advanced stage until Jokanovic confirmed last night that it had fallen through.

As a result, the Blades have had to look elsewhere and Sun reporter Alan Nixon has revealed that Guedioura is a target.

The 35-year-old is well-known to fans in English football as he has had spells with Wolves, Nottingham Forest and Watford, among others.

It was during his time at Vicarage Road that Jokanovic worked with the player, whilst he also managed him at Al-Gharafa, which was Guedioura's previous club before he was available on a free.

As he is without a club, there is no major rush to get this through, although the manner of the 4-0 defeat to West Brom last night does suggest that the Blades need to bring in reinforcements quickly.

They are back in action against Huddersfield this weekend.

The verdict

To go from Ronaldo Vieira, who is a midfielder entering his prime years and having played in Serie A, to a free agent 35-year-old who was previously in Qatar is not exactly going to delight the Sheffield United fans.

And, you can understand why, particularly as Aaron Ramsdale's sale to Arsenal should give the boss money to spend in the market.

But, it's a positive that Guedioura knows English football and more importantly the manager. The fact he's a target suggests Jokanovic is a fan and if he can help the team in the short-term then it will be very welcome, even if more ambitious signings are also required.
