West Bromwich Albion boss Slaven Bilic has issued his verdict on Danny Higginbotham's claim that the Baggies and Leeds United should be promoted to the Premier League automatically if the season cannot be completed.

All EFL fixtures have been suspended for a month and are not set to return until further notice due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The issue of if, how and when the current campaign will be concluded remains unclear, with contrasting rumours and reports circling about how it could be done.

It was revealed last week that the EFL had suggested it could be completed behind closed doors in just 56 days but other reports have hinted those plans are not as far along as previously indicated.

Speaking in the Sun, Higginbotham suggested to Bilic that both Leeds and West Brom should be promoted automatically if the season cannot be concluded and the Croatian coach provided his response.

He said: "We should try to do everything to finish it, even if it drags on until September. In Germany and Italy they are planning on starting training at the beginning of May. It’s getting better in most of the countries, thank God.

"If we can’t start or finish until September then the whole world will have much more important things to worry about.

"I like your idea but it doesn’t matter that West Brom are in a good position now, I would prefer for us to finish it on the pitch."

West Brom are one point back from league leaders Leeds and have a six-point cushion over the play-off places with just nine games left of the current campaign.

The Verdict

The subject of if, how, and when the current season can be concluded is a pressing issue for the Baggies, so it's interesting to hear Bilic's stance.

Understandably, he wants to see his side complete it on the pitch but you feel he would take promotion by any means at this point.

There remains a lot of uncertainty about how things are going to pan out but for the time being it appears continued patience is what is needed, as frustrating as that may be.
