West Brom boss Slaven Bilic admitted he doesn't know the extent of Ahmed Hegazi's injury after the centre-back was forced off on Saturday's defeat against Wigan with a hamstring problem.

The Egyptian international has struggled for regular game time this season, with Kyle Bartley and Semi Ajayi generally preferred by Bilic in central defence.

However, Hegazi came in for the previous two games before the Latics visited and starred as Albion won twice, keeping consecutive clean sheets.

So, he was always going to start against Paul Cook's side but he was forced off just before half-time and Bilic gave the latest on his situation when speaking to the Express & Star after the game - and he made it clear he had sympathy for the 29-year-old.

"It’s disappointing for him. He’s done really well, he worked so hard to get back in the team. Since he came back he was outstanding for us.

"It’s too early to say how bad it is. We have to wait for the scan, but it’s definitely not a knock, it’s not cramp. It’s not a couple of days. Hopefully, it’s not a big one. Hopefully, he’ll be back soon, but we have to wait for the scan."

The verdict

This is a concern for the Baggies as Hegazi has played well in recent weeks and he is the sort of experienced figure that can help the team ahead of this important period.

Obviously, with Bartley available to come into the XI it isn't a massive blow but you do have to feel sorry for Hegazi.

Now, it's about assessing the damage done and Bilic will hope it's nothing serious.
