West Bromwich Albion manager Slaven Bilic has insisted that he could not see the penalty decision that led to the Baggies claiming all three points against Preston on Monday night.

The Baggies returned to the top of the Sky Bet Championship table on Monday night after a late win at Deepdale, thanks to Charlie Austin's stoppage-time penalty in the second-half.

The decision that led to the penalty has caused controversy up and down the country, though, after Kyle Edwards was adjudged to have been brought down by North End goalkeeper Declan Rudd.

Replays suggest, though, that no contact was made between Rudd and Edwards, and that the penalty should not have been awarded by referee Oliver Langford.

Alex Neil raged at Langford's refereeing performance after his side failed to hold onto what would have been an invaluable point.

But via the Birmingham Mail, Bilic refused to be drawn into the debate regarding the controversial decision. He said: "I didn’t see the replay. I saw it on an iPhone and to be fair I didn’t see it properly, only from behind.

"Funny thing was that one of them said it was a penalty, somebody from our club said it wasn’t sure. It should’ve been the other way around.

"There are going to be some sackings in a couple of days!"

West Brom now sit two points clear of Leeds United and also sit seven points clear of Fulham in third place - Bilic's side face Swansea City at The Hawthorns on Sunday.

The Verdict

It didn't look like a penalty at all on second viewing, but people make mistakes and sometimes you need that bit of luck.

It was a massive win for the Baggies, and they just keep on plugging away and putting points on the board.

That late Austin penalty will prove to be so important in the promotion run-in come the end of the season.
