Andy Hinchcliffe has revealed his concern with how Phillip Cocu has started life at Derby County after their latest defeat to East Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest.

A 1-0 loss at the City Ground on Saturday has left the Rams in 16th place and seven points behind the play-off places going into the international break. It was the 11th time Derby had failed to win this season in the league from their 16 games.

And, speaking on the Sky Sports EFL Podcast, Hinchcliffe stated that he can't understand the way the ex-PSV coach is trying to get results with the club and suggested he may need to be more pragmatic moving forward.

"I do feel there is a lack of identity with Derby, I'm not sure what kind of team Cocu is trying to put together there. I've watched them many times and I'm still confused at what they're trying to do.

"Philosophies are fine but if results aren't there you do have to tailor them to pick up points."

Things don't get any easier for Derby after the international break, with high-flying Preston next up at Pride Park on November 23.

The verdict

I think this is a slightly harsh assessment from Hinchcliffe as Cocu had a massive job on his hands with plenty of key men from last season leaving and the off-field problems that have engulfed the club which weren't down to him haven't helped.

As well as that, I think the way he is trying to get the team playing is clear to see but patience will be required for it to pay off.

There's no doubt they don't have enough points on the board but I think Cocu has done a decent job in the circumstances and will have a long-term project in mind with Derby.
