The final of this season’s Checkatrade Trophy will be contested between Portsmouth and Sunderland.

Both won their respective semi-finals with relative ease to make the showpiece occasion at what is set to be a sold-out national stadium.

Wembley is a place for winners, and both will be looking to steal a march on their promotion rival and pick up some silverware, ahead of the end of the season in which either will be hoping for a return to the Championship.

The pair are the two form sides in League One, with Jack Ross’ men pipping Kenny Jackett’s team to the honour over the last six matches.

Sunderland have not lost in their last ten games, with Pompey losing just once.

It is sure to be a combative and tense final under the arch on Mother’s Day between two of the biggest teams to enter the competition.

Prior to the fixture being played out, Sky Sports sourced a prediction from David Prutton on the outcome of the match.

The EFL presenter said: “What an occasion this promises to be at Wembley!

“Two sides who are currently down in League One but have amongst the biggest fanbases in the country.

“Portsmouth are right back on form and actually climbed above Sunderland in the table last week, although the Black Cats were not playing and do have a couple of games in hand.

“It's a great opportunity for either to grab some silverware, and it is tough to call between two sides who will attack from the off.

“It will be close and could go all the way, but I just fancy Pompey to nick it, 2-1.”

The verdict

The perfect final in every sense of it.

Two massive clubs, Wembley full to the rafters – and two of the top teams in League One battling it out for the silverware.

This one could come to a bit of magic, or a mistake, as it will be so tightly contested.

It’s too hard to call a winner, but I would be amazed if there was more than one goal in it.
