Sheffield United and Leeds are still battling it out for second place in the Championship with just three games remaining.

The Yorkshire clubs are both on 82 points with Sheffield United facing a trip to Hull on Easter Monday and Leeds travelling to Brentford in the evening kick-off.

Leeds did hold a three-point lead in the race for automatic promotion, but they slipped up against Wigan at Elland Road last time out to hand Sheffield United the initiative.

Friday's match saw Wigan's Gavin Massey score a dramatic double to hand Paul Cook's side the victory, after Cedric Kipre's first-half dismissal meant the visitors played the majority of the game with ten men.

In the aftermath of Leeds' surprising defeat, Sky Sports pundit Ally McInally admitted he expects Sheffield United to now finish in the top-two ahead of Marcelo Bielsa's side.

He said on Sky Sports News on Friday evening (5:16pm, April 19, 2019) that Sheffield United will finish ahead of Leeds United in the Championship table this season.: "I am going to go for Sheffield United now. That (Leeds) result is humongous.”

Paul Cook's Wigan had arrived at Elland Road with the worst away record in the Football League, which reveals the significance of this defeat.

The Verdict

Sheffield United are certainly now in the driving seat for automatic promotion, with Leeds having lost three of their last six matches in the final run-in.

However, the Blades face an extremely difficult trip to the KCOM Stadium to face a Hull side who have not lost at home in 15 matches.

Leeds' evening kick-off could also work in their favour, as they will know what needs to be done following Sheffield United's afternoon result. Despite that damaging Wigan defeat, you certainly wouldn't put it past Bielsa's side ending the day back in second place.
