Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie has admitted that he believes Coventry City could potentially emerge as contenders for promotion this season if they maintain their consistency in the coming months.

The Sky Blues have managed to make an encouraging start to the 2021/22 campaign under the guidance of manager Mark Robins.

Currently third in the Championship standings, Coventry sent out a real signal of intent to the rest of the division by beating Fulham last weekend.

Despite going behind in this particular clash, the Sky Blues produced a stunning display in the second-half as they sealed all three points in-front of their own supporters.

Viktor Gyokeres netted a brace for Coventry whilst Matt Godden and Ian Maatsen were also on the score sheet as the club secured a 4-1 victory over the Cottagers.

Set to face Blackburn Rovers later this month, the Sky Blues will be determined to produce another promising performance in this particular fixture.

Making reference to Coventry, Hendrie has suggested that the club could challenge for promotion next year if they continue to deliver the goods in the Championship.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Sky Sports EFL Podcast, the former England midfielder said: "I feel like in that front-two, they looked an absolute force [against Fulham] every time it went forward.

"They used the high-press, they were very, very good and I feel that if they can continue that throughout the season, I tell you what, why can't Coventry be there [challenging for promotion] because they've got the foundations to be an absolutely fabulous club which I know they are."

The Verdict

It is hard to disagree with Hendrie's viewpoint as Coventry have managed to produce some fantastic displays in the Championship this season.

Whilst the Sky Blues will need to improve their performances away from home if they are to challenge for a top-two finish, there is no reason why they cannot push on.

The scale of Coventry's success may depend upon whether Gyokeres is able to maintain his fitness as well as his form.

Having already scored nine goals in the Championship, the forward will fancy his chances of adding to his total in the club's upcoming clash with Blackburn.
