Paul Robinson says that he doesn't believe that Patrick Bamford is the man to lead Leeds United to Championship glory.

The 26-year-old has been in a patchy run of form having gone four matches without a goal for the promotion contenders.

That run was brought to an end on Tuesday night, however, with Bamford scoring two goals to help his side to a 3-2 victory over Millwall at Elland Road.

Despite scoring 12 goals so far this term, the former Middlesbrough striker has attracted criticism for the amount of chances that he misses for Marcelo Bielsa's side, and according to the former Leeds goalkeeper, the Whites will need someone else to step up if they're to be crowned champions this term.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, Robinson said: “They lost Eddie Nketiah, he went back to Arsenal because of a lack of game time but the manager has stuck with Patrick Bamford, but he needs a lot of chances to score goals.

“That’s one criticism that you can put his way – he’s not a clinical finisher.

“He needs 10 chances to score one or two goals and in my opinion he’s not the man to fire Leeds to the top of the Championship."

The verdict

The criticism aimed at Patrick Bamford is harsh, but understandable.

Bamford has always been a threat in front of goal with his numbers speaking for themselves when he's played in the second tier.

However with Leeds expecting to secure automatic promotion, it's a valid point that Bamford should be scoring more than he is.

While he does score goals, the 26-year-old does also waste a lot of opportunities and the question around him is whether another frontman would have a higher goal tally given the number of chances created for him.

Bamford will certainly face competition now that Jean-Kevin Augustin has joined the club, and it'll be interesting to see how the pecking order looks once the new arrival has found his feet.
