Saturday afternoon presents the perfect opportunity for Sunderland to put the pressure on table-toppers Portsmouth, with a first ever trip to Accrington Stanley on the horizon.
The Black Cats go into the fixture full of confidence having beaten automatic promotion rivals Barnsley 4-2 at the Stadium of Light last time out in the league.
Jack Ross’ men start as favourites, with Stanley in dismal form having gone without a win in their last six league games, and have dropped to 11th in the Sky Bet League One table.
Yet, a trip to Accrington is often a tough place to go but Sky Sports pundit David Pruttoon has predicted a 2-1 away win for the Black Cats.
“A first ever league meeting between Accrington and Sunderland! Which isn’t all that surprising considering it’s Stanley’s first-ever season at this level and Sunderland haven’t been down in the third tier for 30-odd years.”
“Accrington’s form has fallen away a little bit lately with three defeats on the spin but they will be right up for this one. I just think Sunderland will have too much for them.”
John Coleman’s Accrington have won just two of their last nine games, whereas Sunderland are up to 2nd having lost just one game in the league campaign all season.
I just can’t see it being very easy for Sunderland at all even though they are flying.
Accrington will be hungry for a win having gone without one for a lengthy spell, and they are often quite hard to beat at home – Pompey could only manage a 1-1 draw there.
I predict a similar fate for Sunderland this weekend too although you can understand why Prutton predicts an away victory.
