Sky Sports EFL pundit David Prutton has suggested that Preston could be set to continue their recent momentum by securing another important victory against Millwall on Saturday.
Alex Neil’s side head into the game on the back of an impressive 2-0 win at Stoke City on Wednesday night, which saw the Lancashire club show their battling qualities to ensure they would come away with the three points despite not being at their most fluent best for most of the contest.
That win made it back to back wins for Preston, with the Lilywhites having also secured a 2-1 win at Lancashire rivals Wigan Athletic last weekend, which means that Neil’s side have climbed back into the Championship play-off places as they look to mount a promotion push this campaign.
Preston will head into the game against Millwall full of belief and confidence, with those back to back wins meaning the Lilywhites have now claimed four wins out of their last five Championship matches to really see them close the gap on second placed Leeds United to just three points heading into the weekend.
The Lilywhites have a number of players all playing to their maximum at the moment, with the likes of Ben Davies and Tom Barkhuizen in particular impressing at both ends of the pitch to help Preston put together a real positive run of form, and those two could once again be vitally important against Millwall.
A win for Neil’s side would see them pile further pressure on the teams around them in the table, and would really start to raise hopes that Neil’s side can mount a successful push for promotion to the Premier League this season, either through the play-offs or automatic promotion.
Millwall, meanwhile, head into the game on the back of a recent dip in form which has seen Gary Rowett’s side fail to win any of their last four matches in the Championship, and that has seen them lose some ground on the Championship’s top-six meaning they head into the game seven points adrift of Preston.
However, they did manage to hold promotion chasing Fulham to a 1-1 draw at home in midweek, which will have raised some hopes that they can start to re-find the form they showed during the first few months of Rowett’s reign as Millwall manager.

Making his latest round of EFL predictions for Sky Sports, Prutton suggested that Preston could be set to edge a tight contest by a 2-1 score line, which would see them continue their fine recent run of form, writing: “Preston are proving a few wrong by getting on a good run again and getting back into the thick of the relegation battle. Millwall have had a tough run of games, and it doesn’t get much trickier than a trip to Deepdale. It will be a battle, but Preston will prevail.”
It is difficult to argue with Prutton’s prediction here, with Preston the clear favourites heading into the game at Deepdale in real form and looking like they have the momentum and belief to take three points in any game they have to participate in at the moment.
Millwall are not in same sort of form that they have showed at times since Rowett took over as the club’s manager following Neil Harris’ departure, but the Lions still have plenty of quality to offer and if they could manage to pick up a win against Preston it would put them firmly back in the mix for a top-six finish.
This game therefore could be a potentially crucial one in terms of the battle for the play-offs this season, with a win for Preston seeing themselves climb ten points clear of Millwall, which would give the Lions a real uphill task to catch during the rest of the campaign.
However, a win for Millwall would see them close the gap on Preston to just four points, and would see them in with a genuine chance of being able to catch Neil’s side, so Preston will be really hopeful that Prutton’s prediction proves to be an accurate one.
