Sky Sports’ EFL expert issues relegation prediction ahead of final day showdown

It’s all set to be an enthralling afternoon of football on Saturday, with the final weekend of fixtures taking place in the Championship.

With play-off places and automatic promotion places already confirmed, the attention switches to the battle to survive, with all to play for heading into the final day.

Derby County are currently sat 21st in the Championship, and will know that they can relegate Sheffield Wednesday if they avoid defeat.

But that doesn’t guarantee them safety themselves, as if Rotherham United were to better Derby’s result, then that would send Wayne Rooney’s side into League One with the Owls.

Sky Sports’ EFL expert David Prutton has issued his thoughts ahead of the crunch-clash at Pride Park between Derby and Sheffield Wednesday, and felt as though both teams shouldn’t be fighting for survival on the final day.

Prutton also gave his prediction on Rotherham United’s clash with Cardiff City, as he predicted that Paul Warne’s side would ‘go down fighting’ in a 1-1 draw with the Bluebirds.

“In Derby and Sheffield Wednesday you have two teams down there who absolutely should not be. Even with the points deduction Wednesday have had, they have the squad there to be nowhere near the bottom of the division. It’s poor performances that have put them both in this position, and personnel at the clubs who have fallen woefully short.

“For Derby it is in their hands, for Wednesday there are no second chances. They need to go for the win and hope things go their way in Rotherham’s game. It is out of the Millers’ hands again as they head to Cardiff, and they must be exhausted after the last few weeks. It will be a tough trip for them, because Cardiff showed last week against Birmingham that they are not on the beach yet.

“Rotherham are a team, manager and club you can’t help but like. They will fight, but I feel like they will go down fighting with a 1-1 draw.”

Prutton went on to issue praise for Wycombe Wanderers, who mathematically haven’t been relegated yet, but would need a significant goal swing in their favour on the final day of the season to avoid relegation back into League One.

The EFL pundit went on to predict that Sheffield Wednesday will survive on the final day of the season with a 1-0 win over Wayne Rooney’s side.

“Just a quick word on Wycombe, too. Their budget was tiny for League One, it would have taken a miracle to keep them in the Championship, and it would take the biggest one of all to keep them up. They deserve huge credit for getting to the final day of the season not relegated yet.

“It takes us back to Pride Park for the result, then. I have a feeling that Wednesday could well edge it, and be the side celebrating at full-time.”

It’s set to be a nervy afternoon for both sets of supporters, as they watch their teams in action from the comfort of their homes, away from Pride Park.

Did these 18 players make more than 100 appearances for Derby County or not?

The Verdict:

I have to agree with Prutton here.

Derby County have been nowhere near good enough in the second-half of this year’s league campaign, and they seem to be sleepwalking into League One at this moment in time.

Whereas with Sheffield Wednesday, they’ve shown glimpses of their qualities this season, and it’s a shame to see them down there, as their points deduction has proved crucial it seems.

But Darren Moore’s side have the quality to pick Derby off, and I can see them sneaking a win here, and bettering Rotherham United’s result against Cardiff City, which would see them survive.

It’s going to be a fascinating couple of hours in the battle to survive in the Championship, that’s for sure.
