Preston North End host Birmingham City this weekend looking to close in on a place in the play-offs.

After three consecutive defeats for Garry Monk’s side, their chances of extending their season looks to have wavered slightly.

A win is necessary to keep pace with the five teams above them looking to break into the play-off places.

Preston are one of those teams and could move into the sacred spots come the end of the game with a win and other results being kind to them.

Monk’s men have just one win in their last six matches – losing half of their last ten, too.

Alex Neil’s side are unbeaten in 11 and have won seven games in that time.

Both sides need the points to maintain and improve their chances of making the top-six come may with the games running out.

Ahead of the meeting between the two sides, David Prutton once again offered his prediction to the outcome for Sky Sports, casting his eye on this particular contest.

The EFL presenter said: “Preston are right up there in the play-off battle now.

“Eleven unbeaten has seen them move up to ninth, and just two points off the top six heading into the weekend.

“Birmingham, meanwhile, have lost three in a row and are struggling for any kind of form.

“Preston should claim the three points here, 2-0.”

The verdict

Birmingham’s play-off hopes took a blow after two consecutive defeats, while Preston are continuing their fine form.

The Lilywhites are on form and unbeaten in 11, and that will play a huge part in the confidence between both sides.

The Blues will be out of luck once more for me, I agree with Prutton and think Preston will see off the challenge of a wounded Birmingham side.
