League Two new boys Newport County,back in the Football League after a 25 year absence, got off to a dream start with a 4-1 win over Accrington Stanley. Harry Worley put Newport in front before Chris Zebroski scored twice on his debut and Christian Jolley scoring the 4th to give County a perfect start to life back in league football.

Portsmouth set a League Two record attendance but suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Oxford United at Fratton Park. Patrick Agyemang put Pompy in the lead but two goals each from Deane Smalley and Alfie Potter gave Oxford all three points. Portsmouth also had defender Johnny Ertl sent off for elbowing Danny Rose.

Hartlepool United also started their League Two campaign with a defeat as Rochdale ran out comfortable 3-0 winners at Spotland with goals from Scott Hogan, George Donnelly and Ian Henderson.

Bury, who were also relegated from League One along with Hartlepool last season, also suffered defeat beaten by Chesterfield at Gigg Lane. The Spireites are tipped for promotion this season and had Jay O'Shea and Marc Richards to thank for their opening day victory.

Scunthorpe United spoiled Mansfield Town's return to the Football League as they ran out 2-0 winners at Glanford Park. Matt Sparrow and Sam Winnall scored the goals for the Iron.

Fleetwood Town, who are also tipped by the critics to do well this season, started their season with a 3-1 win over Dagenham and Redbridge thanks to goals from Mark Roberts, Jeff Hughes and Ryan Cresswell who were all making their debuts for the Cod Army.

Sam Parkin, making his debut for Exeter City, scored the winner as City beat Bristol Rovers 2-1 at St. James Park. Danny Coles put Exeter in the lead before Eliot Richards struck from close range to equalizer for Rovers.

Cheltenham Town surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Burton Albion. Jamie Cureton put Cheltenham ahead before was taken off injured in the act of scoring and then Byron Harrison put the Robins 2-0 up on 32 minutes. Billy Kee pulled one back for Burton right on half time from the penalty spot before Rory Delap, making his debut for the Brewers, struck on 56 minutes to share the spoils.

Elsewhere Barry Corr struck to give Southend United a 1-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle, Paris Cowan-Hall scored on his debut to give Wycombe a 1-0 victory over Morecambe so too for Ryan Jarvis who gave York City a 1-0 win over Northampton.

Torquay and AFC Wimbledon played out a 1-1 draw at Plainmoor with both goals coming right at the end. Harry Pell thought he had given Wimbledon the victory with a deflected shot on 88 minutes only to see Aaron Downes pounce for a 90th minute equalizer.
