This weekend saw 40 goals being scored in the Championship and also some division shakeups. Ipswich’s promotion dreams were dashed by a defeat at the hands of Burnley meanwhile Barnsley and Yeovil were both relegated.
The Matchday started on Friday evening when Yeovil faced Brighton. Late goals from Kazenga LuaLua (78th minute) and Manchester United loanee Jesse Lingard (90th minute) gave Brighton the win a tightly contested match were Yeovil showed true pride and guts. The win saw Brighton mover ever closer to a play-off spot.
Burnley kicked off Saturday’s games with a 1-0 victory over Ipswich, denting their promotion chances. Ipswich started the match very poorly as did Burnley and it showed. It took until the 56th minute for a goal to be scored and it went in Burnley’s way when Michael Kightly put the ball in to the empty Ipswich net. The lead was kept by Burnley until the end and they came out as the victors. Only a win would have given Ipswich hope of promotion but now they have to look forward to next season in the Championship.
The Championship match of the day went to Derby County’s magnificent 4-2 win over play-off rivals Watford. In a match that saw 6 goals the fans were given a treat. Troy Deeney gave Watford the lead in the 5th minute but the lead lasted 23 minutes when Jeff Hendrix scored his first of the match. The scoreline stayed the same until the second half. Derby had a very promising start and this showed when Craig Forsyth scored in the 60th minute to give Derby a 2-1 lead. Mathias Ranegie then levelled the match in the 70th minute after he met substitue Ikechi Anya’s cross. But, Watford could only hold on for a further 10 minutes when Jeff Hendrix doubled his tally for the match and his goal was followed by a strike from Chris Martin which made the match 4-2 to Derby. Derby managed to hold on to the win to secure their play-off position.
