Vitoria de Setubal have agreed a fee with a Portuguese club for Sheffield Wednesday target Frederico Venancio, according to The Sheffield Star.

Venancio spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, playing 25 matches and establishing himself as a firm fans' favourite.

The Owls want to sign Venancio on a permanent deal but they now face a battle to do so after Setubal agreed a six-figure transfer sum with an unnamed Portuguese top division club for the defender's services.

The centre-half, however, would prefer a permanent switch to Hillsborough, according to The Sheffield Star's sources.

Setubal want to sell the 25-year-old swiftly because of their current financial problems but Sheffield Wednesday have been hesitant with making their concrete move for the defender, despite him being seen as a major target.

Leeds United are also in the hunt for the former Portugal under-21 international and now his future is up in the air.

The Verdict

Many people just expected Sheffield Wednesday to complete this deal but they have been slow to force this through.

Their own financial issues could be a factor in this.

But Venancio has to be a top target because he was so influential at the back last season and he will only get better.
