Swansea City defender Jake Bidwell could leave the club during the January transfer window but Bristol City are not interested in securing a move for him at this stage, according to Wales Online.

Bidwell’s long-term future at Swansea has been in doubt for a while now with the left-back heading into the final few months of his current deal with the Swans. There was reported interest from Middlesbrough during the summer transfer window, but in the end, the defender remained with Russell Martin’s side.

The 28-year-old has once again been a key player for Swansea this season so far. That comes with him making 16 appearances in the Championship in which time he has registered two goals and one assist. Bidwell has therefore been crucial for Martin in terms of helping him implement his style of play on the Welsh club.

There have been some rumours over recent days that Bidwell’s potential availability in the January transfer window could be of interest to Bristol City. That comes with the left-back area of the squad believed to be a position that the Robins could look to address in the coming transfer windows.

The latest report from Wales Online though reveals that Bristol City at this stage are not showing any interest in Bidwell and they are unlikely to make a move for the 28-year-old during the January transfer window.

The report also adds though that if Bidwell is not going to commit his long-term future to Swansea ahead of the winter window then there is a chance that he could be allowed to leave the club. That is something that the Swans have already seen happen with Conor Roberts during the summer when he went to Burnley after not signing a new deal.

The verdict

Losing Bidwell from their squad would undoubtedly be a real blow for Swansea because the 28-year-old has been a consistent performer for them in the last two and half seasons.

The left-back was excellent last term and registered eight assists in his 42 league appearances to show the type of quality he can bring to the side when getting forwards on the overlap.

However, Swansea are not financially in a strong enough position as a club to allow someone of Bidwell’s quality to just walk out of the door for nothing at the end of the season.

Therefore, you can understand why the Swans might be keen to at least bring in some money for the 28-year-old in the winter window if they are not able to convince him to sign a new deal.

Bristol City could have done really well had they made a move for Bidwell, but it seems from this report that they are not in the hunt for his signature.

Considering the experience and quality that the left-back could bring to the table for the Robins that might be a little bit surprising. It is though good news for the Swans and gives them a better chance of keeping hold of him.
