It is being reported by Calcio Mercato that Atalanta have signed Aston Villa goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini on a permanent deal, having spent the season on loan at the Serie A side.

Should Villa have given the goalkeeper another chance? Is this the right decision by Steve Bruce to let him go permanently?

We discuss....

When Villa loaned Gollini out in January 2016, he was nowhere near good enough for the first-team.

They would have been hoping that a season and a half out on loan in Serie A would improve his game and make him first-team ready at Villa Park, but he has managed just 12 games in a season and a half at Atalanta.

I highly doubt he has improved enough to be the solution to Villa's goalkeeping problems given his lack of playing time and they are better off looking elsewhere for Sam Johnstone's replacement.

Simply not good enough.

I don't think so.

There's few who would argue he is better than Sam Johnstone and whilst you may consider giving him a chance now Johnstone has left, the reality is they have got a very good fee for the player.

In Villa's financial situation you accept that all day long instead of persevering with a keeper who didn't convince anyway.

With Sam Johnstone going, it could’ve been an option, but I think Steve Bruce will want a domestic No.1 in.

However, with money tight at Villa Park, you have to question whether Villa will get the right quality in.

It’s hard to predict where this summer is going to go.
