Derby County must replace Wayne Rooney with a manager 'who knows how to do it', according to Simon Jordan.

The Rams have endured a torrid season in which they've struggled to move away from the bottom end of the Championship table.

Many thought that the club's flirtation with the drop would be short-lived but what we're seeing is that the club may actually have their campaign ending in disaster.

With just three matches remaining Derby are just four points clear of the drop zone - however with Rotherham United having two games in hand it means that Rooney's side may not be in control of their own destiny.

But while outspoken pundit Simon Jordan believes that the Rams will avoid relegation he's cast doubt over whether the Manchester United legend is the right man for the job long-term.

Speaking on Talksport, Jordan said: "I take no satisfaction in it, I think Derby will survive, Alonso will build a relationship with Rooney.

"But if he wants to build Derby into the club that he is saying he wants to build them into, with the greatest respect to Wayne, who I have no doubt will find his way through the coaching world and into a position of influence, this is a job that needs to go to someone who knows how to do it.”

The verdict

There has to be doubts over Wayne Rooney's credentials as Derby County manager.

The Rams have some excellent quality in their team and to think that they're hovering just above the bottom three is very worrying indeed.

Given the size of his reputation I'd imagine that he'll be allowed to keep his job into next term, but there's no doubt that the jury will be out in the opening weeks of the new season.
