Simon Grayson has confirmed that Preston North End have opened talks with Everton about bringing Aiden McGeady back to Deepdale next season, reports the Lancashire Evening Post.

McGeady has been with Preston on a season-long loan during the 2016/17 campaign, impressing for Grayson’s side as they surprised many and finished in the top-half of the Sky Bet Championship table.

The Irish international made 35 appearances across all competitions for Preston, scoring eight goals and assisting his teammates with a further nine.

Grayson confirmed that discussions were taking place between Preston and Everton, he said: “Sometimes a player comes to a particular club and it just fits for him.

“That is the way it worked for Aiden here this season and I’ve said it many times that we want him back.

“We have been speaking with Everton to try and sort something.”

The 31-year old has one year remaining on his contract at Goodison Park, and his time with Everton appears to be over, with McGeady not featuring in Ronald Koeman’s plans.

McGeady has enjoyed a fine personal season at Deepdale, and secured Preston’s player of the year award, to go with his impressive goal tally.

Preston have already put their initial summer plans in place, releasing Jermaine Beckford, Anders Lindegaard and Clive Smith.
