Blackpool boss Simon Grayson has played down the appearance of fan favourite Charlie Adam at last night's friendly against AFC Fylde, as reported by the Blackpool Gazette.

Adam is still a popular figure at Bloomfield Road after spending two years with the club earlier in his career. He scored 34 times in 98 outings as they earned a place in the Premier League, cementing his legend with the Tangerines.

He was seen in the stands last night, just hours after Alan Nixon reported he wasn't in line for a contract with Blackburn, with whom he'd been on trial. That led fans to put two and two together, but new Seasiders' boss Grayson says they're coming up with five.

“I think Charlie lives local, he’s a student of the game and he likes to get out and watch football," he told The Gazette.

“I know Charlie anyway, so I’m sure he was just here for the game. It’s not like we’re signing him in the morning or anything like that.”

Blackpool won the encounter 2-0, with Nathan Delfouneso grabbing one goal and new recruit Adi Yussuf adding a second.

Adam was released by Stoke City last season after seven years in which he made 144 Premier League appearances. He only appeared 12 times in the Championship in his final year, taking his total appearances for the Potters to 179 in all competitions.

He also counts Liverpool and Rangers as former employers.

The Verdict

Fans love a returning legend, just look at how Peterborough have reacted to signing a 33-year-old George Boyd who struggled in the Championship last season. If Blackpool were to bag Charlie Adam, it would have the same effect.

The fans chanted his name last night, demanding Grayson sign him up, but a deal would surely not be that easy. Adam will command a good wage and unless he's prepared to return as a labour of love, he's going to be out of their price range for now.

That's not to say he wouldn't drop his demands as the weeks drag on, but a man with his experience must surely be hoping for a Championship side to show interest.

If not, who knows? The Blackpool fans might get their wish.
