Simon Grayson has vowed not to let any players leave Bloomfield Road until he's been able to add to his squad, as reported by the Blackpool Gazette.

As the transfer deadline in League One draws closer, the former Leeds boss revealed that he's had enquiries for some of his players, but refuses to allow anyone to leave until he's been able to add to his current squad.

"I think we’ve had enquiries for a few of our players but no players will be going out unless I’ve brought some in," he said.

"If we’re going to bring anyone in they’ve got to be better than the ones we are replacing or letting out.

“Plenty of phone calls are going off between myself, Simon (Sadler, owner) and the people connected with the club but we’ve still got 10 days or so, so we will see how it goes.”

One player heavily linked with a move away is summer signing Jamie Devitt. He joined from League Two side Carlisle before Grayson took over and is thought to be surplus to requirements.

He was left out of the squad that drew with Gillingham in midweek, but Grayson revealed that was due to another player returning, rather than an imminent transfer.

"We've got Jay Spearing back, which is a massive bonus for us. I thought when he picked up the injury last Tuesday he was going to be out for a few weeks, but he recovered really well and it was quite an easy decision to bring him back in.

“I knew we needed a bit of height and substance on the bench because of how Gillingham play, so it’s no slight on Jamie. It’s just horses for courses at times.”

The Tangerines have made a strong start to the season, remaining unbeaten in their first four fixtures with three wins and a draw.

The Verdict

I'm not convinced that's why Devitt was left out at all; he's just not fitting into Grayson's pattern. I suspect had the former Sunderland man been in charge all summer, Jamie Devitt wouldn't have secured his move to the Tangerines.

Grayson has got off to a great start at Bloomfield Road and is no less than their long-suffering fans deserve. They look to be a good, organised side with a potent attack and committed defenders.

If they add one or two more before the window shuts then they'll be serious promotion challengers this season, with or without Jamie Devitt.
