Simon Grayson has insisted his Preston North End side do not want their season to “end on a damp squib”, declaring his side will be fighting for every point in their remaining three fixtures in the Sky Bet Championship, reports the Lancashire Evening Post.

Preston face Newcastle United this evening, with the Magpies in search of a victory, which will see them secure automatic promotion back to the Premier League.

Grayson’s side are currently 11th in the Championship table, with nothing to play for in their remaining fixtures, however, the North End manager insists his side will not be taking it easy in the coming weeks, he said:

“We don’t want the season to end on a damp squib.

“It is about maintaining the high standards we’ve got here, both in training and with our performances on the pitch.

“We have to play these last three games like they are the first match of the season.”

North End stood an outside chance of breaking into the Championship’s Play-Off places up until recent weeks, but three consecutive defeats have left Grayson’s side facing another season in the second-tier.

Despite a daunting task at St James’ Park this evening, Grayson will be confident of a positive result, especially with Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle also failing to pick up a victory in their last three fixtures.
